Wright Elementary Monthly Newsletter

Let me begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year, filled with many successes and continued progress. I hope that the holiday season was safe and rejuvenating for your family.

As educators at Wright, we are thankful for all the great opportunities we have to impact the young lives of our students - they are the reason we’re here. As we all returned to school on January 2nd, the atmosphere was encouraging and cheerful. As the second trimester begins, our whole staff has one vision for our students and we hope it closely matches yours: We want ALL of our young falcons to become all they can be. We want them to be successful through hard work, consistent attendance, perseverance, utilizing help from our staff, and working diligently.

As we enter 2024, I personally look forward to continuing to create opportunities that make our school a place where all children enjoy learning, develop strong relationships, and continue to grow each day socially, emotionally, and academically. As always, thank you for your continued support!

The Salem-Keizer School District Health Services Team will be at our school on Thursday, January 4th to complete vision screenings on all K-3rd grade students.  If you would like your child(ren) to opt out, please notify the school office in writing prior to that date. If the opt-out letter is not received prior to the date above, we cannot guarantee that your child(ren) will not be screened. There is no formal letter or form for a parent to complete.  If you would like to OPT OUT, you just need to put something in writing (handwritten note, signed email...) stating that you do not want your child(ren) screened.

If you have a 4th or 5th Grade student that you would like to have a vision screening completed, please call us at (503) 399-3198 so that we can get you the required form.

Child getting vaccination

If your child is not up-to-date on required 2023-24 school immunizations for the State of Oregon or does not have a valid exemption on file, they will be excluded from valuable instruction time due to the state-mandated vaccination deadline on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

The statewide requirement applies to all children enrolled for five or more days per school year in a school or preschool or five or more days per calendar year in other children’s facilities. This will include Salem-Keizer students within the EDGE program.

For more information please visit our district website for details

For the 2023-24, all Salem-Keizer schools qualify for no-cost meals under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This program allows SKPS to provide all students enrolled at Salem-Keizer Public Schools a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to your household each day. You will not be required to complete any free/reduced-price meal paperwork for your students.

If your student will be absent for any reason, please call our Absence Reporting Line at (503) 399-5503 24 hours a day/7 days a week and leave a detailed message that includes student name, ID number, diagnosis, symptoms and date symptoms started.

Student school hours are 7:50am-2:20pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Every Wednesday during the school year will be a one hour late start. School hours on Wednesdays are 8:50am-2:20pm.

Doors open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7:30am for students to access breakfast and 7:40am to begin entering their classrooms. Wednesdays are one hour later.

Please do not park in the bike lane, block intersections, OR neighboring households driveways when picking up or dropping off your student. This is illegal and creates an unsafe environment for children and families.

Please do not drop your student's off in the bus lane or at the parking lot entrance in front of the school. This is a safety precaution and will be strictly enforced. Additionally, the bus lanes cannot be blocked during school hours. Also, please make sure your student has safely exited your vehicle and is on the sidewalk before starting to drive away.

Please utilize crosswalks that are manned by a crossing guard. If your student walks to or from school by themselves, remind them of the importance of using appropriate crosswalks.

Wright's school counselor is Carolyn Jones. She is highly trained and able to help students and families with a variety of needs. You may reach her by email at or call our office at (503) 399-3198 to speak with her.

Our Community-School Outreach Coordinator is here to help Wright families connect with many different resources that are available in food, clothing, school supplies, and much more. Please contact Samantha Gibson at (503) 399-3198 or for more information on what is available.

Prepare for the Winter season

As the weather is changing and temperatures are getting colder, it’s a good opportunity to make sure everyone is prepared in the event of weather conditions that may affect school operations. In the event of bad weather, district officials will make decisions on school operations, which may result in changes such as a delay in school start times, or a school closure. If no announcement is made through official district channels, the district is operating as usual.

All families and staff will be notified through ParentSquare as soon as any operational changes are made. Notifications may be sent as a phone message, text message, email and/or push notification for app users, depending on notification preferences. Please take a moment to make sure you have ParentSquare downloaded and your notification settings.

Additionally, the district will post all official decisions on operational adjustments on the district website and official social media accounts.
